AlDente overview

AlDente allows you to limit your MacBook from charging above a certain percentage. This will not only decrease Battery wear but also increase longevity of your Battery.

Features:
  • Charge Limiter allows you to set your maximum charging percentage between 20 and 100 percent. You can either set it by using the slide bar or by typing in the desired percentage in the field above and pressing enter afterwards.
  • Discharge - This feature allows your MacBook to run completely on Battery even if it is plugged in. Therefore, you can actively discharge your MacBook to a more healthy percentage. Unfortunately, while Discharge is activated, clamshell mode is not supported due to technical limitations.

AlDente comes in two service levels: Free and Pro. Compare the plans.

I own the 'Pro' versions of both AlDente and BatFi (for roughly $10 each, I'm more than happy to support the developers). Even though AlDente has more features (and I bought it first), I now use BatFi for the simple reason that I much prefer the UI.

It's a good app, but licensing makes it unusable for me; I often spend weeks without an internet connection, and unless you have internet, every 30 days, the software I paid for will stop working. If you leave on a two-week trip on the 29th day, you won't have Aldente working till you get back not a good system, especially for a lost cost app like Aldente.

I never use my battery, and Apple doesn't provide any guidance about how to deal with the situation, so I opt for following their guidance for long term storage and set AlDente to try to keep my battery's charge at a steady 50%. I'll note that it never hits 50% on the mark, but the 53% it does maintain is sufficient for my purpose. As noted by Aapple, AlDente works only while there's an active user. It doesn't work...allows my battery to charge while, for instance, I'm running an update/grade, so I've got to do a discharge afterwards. UGLY ****ed icon needs color at the least.

Well, that was underwhelming. Simply doesn't work. Took the charger out, got it down to 26%, started AlDente and set the limit at 80%, and now it sits at 89%. Great app. Not. Will be uninstalling now and will NOT recommend to other people.

I really looked forward to this working. I installed it on both users on my M1 MBP and set them to the same 80% limit. It worked, it seemed, as long as one of the users was active, but as soon as it was switched to the login screen, it charged to 100%. Perhaps one needs has to have an user active to make this work. Too bad there is no way to tell the developer of this unless I pay. Alas. If I knew the paid version did not have this problem, I would pay gladly.
